MY Forest Watch

The MY forest Secretariat publishes the MY forest watch electronic newsletter every quarter in this page. The e-newsletter aims to disseminate information on various aspects of the project, including concluded and coming campaigns, media outreach, stakeholder news and partner activities.

We strongly recommend MY forest stakeholders and partners send relevant news items, including their activities, to the Communications Officer as the e-newsletter could be further disseminated to stakeholders and partners' own network of contacts.

Dear stakeholders, project partners, community groups, readers,

Welcome to the first edition of the MY forest watch Newsletter, our outreach in disseminating information on the MY forest project, especially to the National Stakeholder Committee and valued partners.

In line with the project, Strengthening Non-State Actor Involvement in Forest Governance, our stakeholders – NGOs, civil societies, local communities, the Orang Asli, the corporate sector and the public at large – are the most important elements in effecting better management of our forests.

As we strive to empower non-state actors in influencing forest policy – in capacity building, skills and knowledge training, sharing of experience and information, and networking – you, the stakeholders, are essential in ensuring the project’s success.

Alongside the website and Facebook page, this quarterly Newsletter will add a further layer in MY forest’s information-sharing platform, putting together relevant updates, news and green issues, as well as ongoing and proposed activities, in an easily digestible format.

Such a platform will not only help share information about MY forest as a whole, but is also a means of publicising each activity carried out by the project’s stakeholders and partners, and their results and achievements.

I therefore exhort you to treat this Newsletter as your very own, and send regular updates on your actions and strategies, concerns and celebrations, so that all stakeholders, partners, sponsors and interested parties can be apprised on the implementation of this project in Malaysia.

As you will see below, the Newsletter has collated stories and news relating to MY forest’s activities, while also highlighting action by the project’s regional implementation agencies in Indonesia, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea, as well as project coordinator BirdLife International and other partners.

It is my hope that this Newsletter gives us the opportunity to learn and glean information and inspiration, and propels us towards achieving the objectives of MY forest of giving non-state actors a voice in improving the use and protection of our green spaces.

Thank you for being part of MY forest. Together, we can make things better for our natural heritage, for our forests and our wildlife.

MY COMMUNITY

Under the project, "non-state actors" can be defined as all entities outside of the government sphere, and here it includes NGOs, civil society organisations, local community groups, Orang Asli groups, interested parties, the academia, the public, the media and the corporate sector.

They are the ones to benefit the most from capacity building under MY forest, and whose stories will be captured under the MY Community theme.

In this edition of the newsletter, you can read about the MY forest Launch Ceremony and the call for all Malaysians to protect our forests, and several MY Community sessions organised towards better governance of our forests.

Read on about:
  • When MNS Branches around the country got together for a conference on the Role of MNS as a Non-State Actor in Green Governance
  • Civil society organisations sitting at the Central Forest Spine Roundtable to share information and brainstorm ideas on pushing for greater protection for Peninsular Malaysia's green backbone
  • The annual Orang Asal celebrations, during which a seminar highlighted 10 years of the UN Declaration of Rights for Indigenous Peoples
